SCENE NINETEEN:

INT. HANGAR BAY – MOON BASE DELTA – 2125

The Keely comes on for a landing. The boarding ramp opens with a hiss. Phil and Keely walk down together and are met by a CORPORAL.

PHIL
Corporal.

CORPORAL
(to Phil)
Captain,
(to Keely
Miss Teslow.

PHIL
Let me guess. Pim?

KEELY
Yeah.

CORPORAL
On President Diffy's orders we've prepared a briefing for you on your next mission, Captain, in room 101. Miss Teslow, if you follow me I'll show you to your quarters. You'll have twelve hours shore leave.

KEELY
I—

PHIL
It's okay. Go with him. Everything's fine. The briefing shouldn't take long.

INT. KEELY'S Quarters – MOON BASE DELTA

Keely stands alone near the door. She looks around the room. There's a queen sized bed, an armoire, and a footlocker. On the left side there's a door leading into the bathroom. Everything is metal and sterile and neat.

She opens the armoire. One side contains white underclothes, the other side brown leather over clothes.

Keely tries them on. She stands in front of the mirror in the bathroom dressed in a loose white tunic, brown leather pants and a brown leather jacket that accentuate her curves. She looks like a space cowgirl.

KEELY
Boots...

VOICE
Footlocker.

Keely looks around.

KEELY
Hello?

VOICE
There are boots in the footlocker.

KEELY
Who are you? Where are you?

VOICE
I am the automated room services.

KEELY
Oh... footlocker.
(looks around)

She runs into the room, and pulls open the footlocker. She yanks a pair of clunky, brown leather boots on, and walks around in them. She goes to the mirror.

KEELY
Okay... I've exhausted every possible source of entertainment in the room.

She sits down on the closed toilet to think.

VOICE
I'm sure we could find something else to do.

INT. 101 – MOON BASE DELTA

Phil sits in a small white room with thick goggles on over his eyes. Images and words flash before him. Mission plans are transmitted into his brain subliminally.

INT. CORRIDOR – SLEEPING QUARTERS – MOON BASE DELTA

Phil walks down the corridor, stops and presses a button at the side of a door. The door slides open, to reveal Keely sitting on the bed with a pair of virtu-goggles on her eyes.

PHIL
Keely?

He walks up and pulls the goggles off.

KEELY
Oh! Phil, you scared me.

She laughs, then hugs him and pulls him down on top of her.

PHIL
Keely?

KEELY
I love the future.

They roll so that they're lying on their sides, face to face.

KEELY
I've been playing videogames all day... I'm not even sure what time it is.

PHIL
Technically there is no time... we're... on the moon.

KEELY
So where are we going?

PHIL
The Vega System. Pim has us attending some kind of peace conference with Corlath ambassadors. Which is weird... because she told me we were launching an attack on them.

KEELY
Maybe she changed her mind.

PHIL
(sitting up)
Maybe...

KEELY
(sitting up as well)
How long before we leave?

PHIL
We've still got ten hours.

KEELY
That is a long time.

She smiles and kisses him.

PHIL
Hungry?

KEELY
Starved.

SCENE EIGHTEEN:

INT. PHIL'S BEDROOM – THREE AM

Phil sits on the edge of his bed, buttoning up his uniform.

EXT. DIFFY RESIDENCE – BACKYARD

Phil walks out, pulling on his leather jacket. He opens the garage door.

INT. THE KEELY

Phil, starts up the engine, puts in coordinates and takes off.

For some time Phil time travels, then SUDDENLY, the door to the cargo hold slides open.

Keely stumbles in, holding her stomach.

KEELY
I feel nauseous.

PHIL
(undistracted)
It's the time motion. You get used to it.

Suddenly Phil does a double take.

PHIL
Keely? What are you doing here?

KEELY
I think I'm going to puke.

She bends double and starts to vomit.

PHIL
No! wait!

He jumps up from the driver's seat.

LATER.

The ship is on autopilot. Phil wipes the corners of Keely's mouth with a tissue, then holds out a pill.

PHIL
Take it, you'll feel better.

He puts it in her mouth and she swallows.

PHIL
What were you doing back there?

KEELY
To be honest... I don't really know.

PHIL
I thought you understood why I couldn't—

KEELY
Look, Phil,
(sits up)
I know you're trying to play superman...

PHIL
Don't be ridiculous.

KEELY
You're trying to save the world and protect me from it at the same time. We've been apart for a long time. If I'd stayed we might've been apart forever. I can die in the past just as easily as I can die in the future. I'd rather be with you.

PHIL
I won't let you—

KEELY
Oh, shut up. If you even try to take me home now I'll be so pissed at you you'll never get me back, so just deal with it. I'm coming with you.

PHIL
But you don't know how to fight.

KEELY
So you can teach me. Heck. It's not like you went into it with any kind of training.

PHIL
But.

KEELY
How long is it going to take us to get there?

PHIL
A few hours...

KEELY
You might want to start teaching me what I need to know then.

PHIL
I—

She smiles.

KEELY
I mean... we could just make out, but I'm pretty sure this is more important.

SCENE SEVENTEEN:

EXT. THE DIFFY RESIDENCE – NIGHT

The world is at peace.

INT. PHIL’S BEDROOM

Phil lies sound asleep. The dust covered clock on his night stand reads “10:00 pm.”

EXT. BACKYARD – DIFFY RESIDENCE

Keely follows Pim into the Diffy backyard, and stops.

KEELY
Look, I came all this way... what is this all about?

Pim stops and shakes her head, looking around thoughtfully, rubbing her eyes, and then walking back to where Keely stands.

PIM
(whispered)
We’d only been back in the future for three months. Phil was... well... he wasn’t talking much. I guess Dad wanted to... I don’t know... break him out of his shell... bring back the old Phil. So we went on vacation... it was supposed to help us readjust... ever since we’d gotten back we’d all had a hard time... fitting in. We’d been banned from time travel... so the only way left to go was up.

Pim points at the stars.

EXT. SPACE – THE VEGA SYSTEM – 2121

Vega is a massive blue star, around which six planets orbit. The three nearest it are very small and dead looking. The fourth is massive: VEGA MAJOR. Vega Major is a yellow/green gem slowly spinning on it’s axis.

The fifth is roughly half the size of earth, and un-spinning, one side perpetually dark, the other perpetually light. This is VEGA MINOR. The dark side is silty, black and dotted with volcanos. The light side is emerald green and beautiful.

PIM VO
Vega Minor. It was a big vacationing spot at the time, but.

In closer pools and resorts hide beneath the leafy cover of the trees. The brightside is a playground.

PIM VO
It was a literal paradise... we’d Terra formed it twenty years earlier–

KEELY VO
Wait–

EXT. BACKYARD – DIFFY RESIDENCE – 2008

The epic music that accompanied Pim’s descriptions halts with the screech of a quickly stopping record.

KEELY
What does “terra formed” mean?

PIM
(Sighs)
It means we brought in water and earth plants to make it livable for humans.

KEELY
Got it.

EXT. BRIGHT SIDE – VEGA MINOR – 2121

The Diffy’s are seen unpacking camping gear, dressed in ridiculous “Jungle Jim” clothing.

PIM VO
Vega Minor is stuck in perpetual day and night. It doesn’t spin on it’s axis. So while one side is paradisiacal the other is barren...

EXT. DARKSIDE – VEGA MINOR

The terrain of the darkside is covered in strip-mines and oil rigs.

PIM VO
They’d been mining in the dark for thirty years and they’d completely exhausted the soil. There was nothing left to mine. With no minerals to export, the cash flow to the darksiders disappeared. Suddenly, men who’d gotten rich off the land were sitting on a completely worthless nation....

EXT. BACKYARD – DIFFY RESIDENCE – 2008

Keely blinks. Pim stops and examines her.

PIM
Well... I’ll just get to the point then, shall I?

EXT. BRIGHTSIDE – VEGA MINOR – 2121

The Diffy’s are hiking through the jungle.

PIM VO
We were on an adventure...

A FLARE shoots up into the sky.

LLOYD
Looks like someone’s in trouble... let’s go check it out.

BARB
Kids... stay here. If anything goes wrong... head back to camp.

Lloyd and Barb head off.

PIM VO
We got separated...

Pim bats away a mosquito the size of her pinky finger, and pulls out a can of bug spray.

SUDDENLY: the sounds of gruff voices yelling in the opposite direction from that in which the Older Diffys disappeared, reach Phil and Pim.

Their heads turn as the voices are slowly droned out by the nearing sound of an engine’s growl, and the snapping of branches and undergrowth.

PHIL
Hello?!

A TREE snaps in two, falling and hitting the ground with great force, just barely missing Phil and Pim. Pim screams, Phil grabs her.

PHIL
Get down!

He pulls her down and into the bushes. They watch as an ENORMOUS TRACTOR with jagged, spinning arms rips its way through the jungle.

EXT. JUNGLE

Phil and Pim come upon a new made clearing. The ripped up foliage is being piled on one side of the opening and torched. A giant DRILL is being set up on the other side. It is held several feet above the ground, like a dagger ready to strike. Stinging brown smoke billows up from the green, and ashes fly.

Barbara Diffy is chained to the giant tractor and Lloyd Diffy is being beaten by a BALD MINER with a shovel. A SECOND MINER stops the bald miner and tells him to stand back. He holds up a gun, and aims, ready to fire at Lloyd.

Pim grabs ahold of Phil’s shoulder and turns him around to face her. She’s holding up a handful of small explosives. Phil gives her a “where did you get those” look.

PIM
Just... in case.

GUNFIRE followed by a SCREAM causes them to turn. Lloyd is writhing on the ground. He’s been shot in the shoulder. He cries out in pain.

SECOND MINER
Hold still!

Phil grabs two small bombs from Pim, and hurls them at the drill’s supports. The EXPLOSION attracts the Miner’s attentions as the drill falls free, stabbing into the earth and sending OIL shooting up in a thick stream.

The Second Miner, seeing Phil fires through the mist of oil in his direction. The oil catches fire. Phil ducks.

BARB
Phil! Pim! Run!

PIM VO
They were drilling illegally on the Brightside... and they were ready to kill to keep it a secret.

Phil grabs two more bombs, leaving Pim with one.

PHIL
Stay safe.

He runs, bent double around the clearing as the MINERS try to put out the fire that’s now spreading to the forest.

Lloyd Diffy is still writhing in pain. The Bald Miner, unrestricted is approaching him menacingly. He puts one steel-toed boot down on Lloyd’s wounded shoulder, causing him to cry out. The Miner lifts up his shovel to strike.

Phil lobs a bomb directly at the Miner’s head. The miner is blown away to the other side of the clearing. Phil runs to where Barb is chained up and with his Wizard breaks her free.

The Second Miner spots them, and turns away from the fire which is now out of control. He raises his gun again. Phil goes to throw his last bomb, but is shot in the arm, and drops it. It goes off next to his feet, hurling him and Barb several yards backwards into the brush.

Pim, who has been slowly approaching from her hiding spot, jumps on top of the Second miner, and wrestles the gun from his hand.

EXT. BACKYARD – DIFFY RESIDENCE – 2008

PIM
(Lost in memory)
I’d managed to get things under control by the time Police forces came in. The fire was so big you could see it from satellites. I went to visit Phil in the hospital...

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – SPACE STATION – VEGAN ORBIT – 2121

Phil lays in a hospital bed, he is staring out the window at Vega, bright blue in the distance.

PIM VO
His injuries were minimal... they healed quickly... Dad got the worst of it, but for some reason... even when Phil was better... he was worse. He wouldn’t talk or eat...

Pim stands just outside, in the hallway conversing with a Nurse. There is a large glass wall between them, blocking out noise.

PIM VO
He’d been given multiple metals for courage... they offered our whole family officer status... with a war starting they needed brave men... but he was a vegetable.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – NIGHT

The lights have been turned off, creating an artificial night.

Pim sits at Phil’s bedside.

PIM VO
I went to visit him one night. He was sleeping... even less responsive than usual... but I wanted to be there for him...

PHIL
(Mumbling)
no...no...

PIM VO
It was the first time he’d said something coherent in two months.

PIM
(Touching his shoulder)
Phil?

He wakes, suddenly and grabs a hold of her hand.

PHIL
I don’t want to die.

He pulls her almost violently toward him, clinging desperately.

PIM
Everything’s okay, Phil. You’re going to be fine.

PHIL
(Hysterical)
You don’t understand. I can’t die. I have to get back to her, have to get back.

He is holding her very close now.

PIM
You’re not going to die.

She touches his sweating forehead. He seems to calm down.

PIM
You’re not going to die.

He sighs, his eyes flutter, and he falls back asleep.

PIM VO
A week later he asked to be released.

EXT. BACKYARD – DIFFY RESIDENCE – 2008

PIM
When we decided to take the army up on their offers... he went along with it. I was never sure if it was really what he wanted...

Keely is speechless. Pim watches her for a moment, silently, watches as emotions race across Keely’s visage.

PIM
(Suddenly)
Come, I want to show you something.

Keely follows Pim wordlessly to the garage. Pim presses a code into the keypad, and the garage door slides open revealing THE KEELY, it’s name written in massive gold letters. It’s beautiful in the dim light of the garage. Keely stares, breathless. After a moment she speaks.

KEELY
Why are you telling me all of this?

PIM
Because I believe he needs you.

KEELY
He doesn’t need me... he’s got... a life and a purpose... I’m nothing... I’m just some girl he was stupid enough to fall in love with.

Pim slaps Keely hard across the face.

PIM
Snap out of it. What happened to you? You’ve become all of the stereotypes I used to make fun of you for. At least it used to be partially untrue. You miss Phil. We get it. Go DO something about it, for pete’s sake!

Pim turns and stalks into the house, leaving Keely by her lonesome.

SCENE SIXTEEN:

INT. LAUNDRY ROOM – TESLOW RESIDENCE – EVENING

Keely is folding laundry, her face almost completely blank, her eyes red ridden.

PHIL VO
Don’t cry. Please, Keel, don’t.

EXT. KEELY’S HOUSE – 2005 – NIGHT

Phil and Keely stand on the porch, they’ve been saying their last goodbyes. Tears are streaming down Keely’s face.

KEELY
I can’t help it.

Phil rubs her tears away and holds her face in his hands.

KEELY
I’m not sad... How can I ask for more... just knowing you love me... should be enough right?
(Beat)
I’m afraid, Phil. Who’ll protect me when you’re gone? Who’ll... hug me? Who’ll make me smile?

Phil pulls her into his arms and they lean heavily on each other.

KEELY
Who’ll tell me it’s all okay? Who’ll stop me from crying?

PHIL
Well... all you have to do is think of me. Think of how badly I’ll be wanting to do all of those things. If you think of me... if you know inside that I love you, it’ll be like I’m with you all the time.

KEELY
(pulls away)
Why does it feel like you’re dying?

INT. LAUNDRY ROOM – 2008

Keely, stony faced continues to mates socks. A tear streaks one cheek.

KEELY VO
We’re saying things that people say at funerals.

She throws a pair of socks at the wall suddenly, and sinks with her body leaning against the washing machine, her arms folded atop a pile of clean socks, and her face hidden in them.

After a moment of silence the socks she threw are thrown back at her. She looks up, expecting to see her mother, and is suddenly taken aback when she sees Pim standing in the doorway.

KEELY
(Startled)
Pim. What are you doing here?

PIM
There’s something you don’t know about Phil.

Keely looks inquiringly across at her.

SCENE FIFTEEN:

INT. KITCHEN – DIFFY RESIDENCE – AFTERNOON

Pim stands in the corner, talking into her communicator. Phil walks in, stricken. She sees him, and hangs up.

PIM
Good news!

PHIL
Yeah?

PIM
You’re going back.

PHIL
When?

PIM
Tomorrow, three AM.

PHIL
Great. What about you.

PIM
I’m staying on a day or two extra to wait for the security checks. I’ll be with you soon enough.

He nods, and sits down. Her businesslike attitude drops, and she walks up behind him, putting her arm on his shoulder.

PIM
You okay?

PHIL
I’m fine...

Beat.

PIM
Well... you have your orders Captain. Get some shut-eye, you have an early morning tomorrow.

PHIL
Yes sir.

SCENE FOURTEEN:

EXT. PICKFORD ADJACENT – DAY

Keely parks her car at the curb and gets out. She looks across the street at the old Diffy place. Even from the outside she can see that ten or twenty military men are wandering around inside taking care of business. She walks up, dreamlike.

INT. FRONT HALL
Keely walks in. Two privates brush by her, carrying a heavy box labeled “crumplers.” She takes a step back, then walks further into the hall.

INT. KITCHEN

Keely starts to walk in, then stops standing at the doorway. Across the room Phil and Pim stand near the sink arguing viciously.

PHIL
I don’t think you realize how much of a threat the Corlath represent. Even if they aren’t ready for an attack the instant we make one they’re going to be furious. Their time technology is advanced.... I’m scared Pim. They’ve taken over more planets than we can even name because we’ve lost all records of their existence. They’re altering things that were documented decades ago. Every time I go out there I come back thanking God my own family hasn’t forgotten I ever existed.

Pim has already noticed Keely standing in the doorway and is staring at her, barely listening to Phil. Phil’s head turns, almost in slow motion to Keely. Time seems to stop as they stare, silently.

KEELY
Phil...

PHIL
Keely... what are you doing here?

KEELY
I... I heard... heard someone say your name... I just had to know.

Phil runs his fingers through his hair, looks down at the ground, around the room, then back at Keely.

PHIL
I... you shouldn’t be here.

KEELY
(Face falling)
What?

PHIL
You shouldn’t’ve come.

PIM
Phil...

Keely looks as if she’s about to run away.

PHIL
Don’t look at me like that. It’s just–

KEELY
I didn’t–I’m sorry

She turns and hurries out.

PIM
If you don’t run after her, you deserve to be forgotten.

PHIL
Keely
(Runs out)

EXT. DIFFY RESIDENCE

Keely is at her car. Phil runs out into the street.

PHIL
Keely, wait

KEELY
(Not looking at him)
I thought you’d be happy to see me.

PHIL
I am happy I just–

KEELY
(Turning)
Happy? This is happy?

They are now standing face to face and very close.

PHIL
Oh. How do I explain this?

KEELY
Explain what, Phil? Just say it. You don’t love me anymore?
PHIL
No.

KEELY
You’ve got a girlfriend?

PHIL
No.

KEELY
A wife?

PHIL
Keely. No. Nothing like that.

KEELY
What then?

PHIL
I’m not–I’m not the person I was when I left you.

KEELY
Neither am I I’m a woman now. I’ve graduated high school. I’m going to college. Do you know how many guys I’ve turned down for you? I’ve been waiting three years for you to come back and now you’re here... and you don’t want me.

PHIL
I do want you Keely.

KEELY
Then don’t send me away.

PHIL
I’m military now. I’m a soldier. We’re at war, Keely. Last night I was almost shot to death by assassins.

Keely’s back straightens unnaturally.

KEELY
How long have you been...

PHIL
Two years.

KEELY
Oh...
PHIL
I wanted to come back... so badly, Keely. We just got caught up in it and then before I knew it... We were all officers and people were relying on us to... I don’t know... hold the world together.

KEELY
Phil...

PHIL
I kept telling myself I would just leave... I kept saying “this month I’ll go back,” “after this battle I’ll see her again.” But the longer we were out there the more I started to think... maybe I wasn’t meant to be with you. Maybe I was meant to fight this war.

Keely looks away.

PHIL
I still... I...

He frowns and hangs his head.

KEELY
I had no idea... I feel so... selfish now. All these years I’ve been feeling so... cheated... sounds like... like they needed you more.

PHIL
Keely...

KEELY
I’m sorry...
(Her breath catches)
But... but I’m glad I know... At least... at least I know the reason we’re apart is something honorable... you didn’t just... stop caring.

They evade making eye contact, then when they finally do she moves in to kiss him, but stops herself.

KEELY
Goodbye, Phil. I won’t... I won’t bother you again.

She kisses him on the cheek and then gets into the car, and drives away with tears in her eyes. He rubs the back of his neck and watches her go.

SCENE THIRTEEN:

PHIL and PIM sit at the kitchen table, on which has been constructed a hologram projector. They are watching a three dimensional map of the Vega Star System.

PIM
Corlathi forces are focusing on Tanar Prime. Their defenses of Vega minor have thinned noticeably in the last twelve days. There is only one Crusher class Station currently in orbit, and it can’t be holding more than fifty, one man fighters...

PHIL
But... they’ll know by now you’re planning an attack... after the speech and the assassination attempt.

PIM
I managed to quarantine the information to earth. We’ve cut all communications between Earthsiders and Spacesiders to prevent leaks.

PHIL
But... won’t that cause an uproar... that’s obstruction of freedom of speech.

PIM
We’re at war Phil.

PHIL
No, we’re not at war. President Zinke–

PIM
President Zinke is no longer the President, Phil. He was voted out of office the day after the assasination attempt was made.

PHIL
Did people think he had something to do with it?

PIM
It’s a possibility.

PHIL
No. Zinke’s a good man. He would never–

PIM
All’s fair, Phil. You’ve been in this thing long enough to know that. I declared War two hours ago.

PHIL
So what now?

PIM
Now, we wait.

PHIL
Wait for what?

PIM
Wait for the examinations to be over. I have my top men working round the clock to figure out what went wrong, how those people got in. We’ll strike as soon as it’s safe for me to return to the future.

SCENE TWELVE:

INT. AUDITORIUM – PICKFORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE – DAY – 2008

Keely sits on the second row, doodling in the margins of her notebook.

PROFESSOR
...he would rather die than be separated from Juliet. His love is worth more to him than life itself. His love blinds him.

Keely doodles, “Phil,” amongst a sea of hearts.

PHIL VO
Ask me to stay.

EXT. PARK – NIGHT – 2005

Keely looks over at Phil from where she’s laying at his side.

KEELY
What?

PHIL
If... if you ask me to stay... I will.

She looks away for a moment, thinking.

KEELY
How... how can I ask you to do that?

PHIL
It’s easy. You just say, “stay with me, Phil.”

KEELY
How can I ask you to leave your family?

Phil sighs and looks away.

PHIL
And how can I ask them to leave me?

He sits up.

KEELY
Phil...

He rests his hand gently on hers, but doesn’t meet her eyes.

PHIL
Just... just wish we’d... wish we could’ve been born in the same century. It’s not fair.

She sits up.

PHIL
There’s never going to be anyone else... you know? And tomorrow...

He bites his lip and fights back tears. She hugs him from behind.

EXT. PARKING LOT – PICKFORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE – DAY

Keely walks out to her car, her purse slung over her shoulder and her arms laden with books. She opens the trunk and dumps her books in. Two MILITARY MEN walk behind her.

FIRST PRIVATE
I just don’t see why–

SECOND PRIVATE
Commander Diffy’s orders.

They pass out of earshot. Keely stares after them, frozen suddenly.

SCENE ELEVEN:

INT. PHIL'S OLD BEDROOM – 2008 – MORNING

Phil wakes up to the sound of footsteps and muffled voices below. He looks at the time then sits up.

INT. FRONT HALL

Phil walks down the stairs. The downstairs area of the house is a bustle with military personnel moving back and forth.

PHIL
Pim?
(he stops a passing PRIVATE)
Excuse me Private.

PRIVATE
Captain?

PHIL
Could you tell me what exactly's going on here?

PRIVATE
Top-secret, sir.

PHIL
Of course it is. Could you possible point me in the direction of the responsible party?

PRIVATE
Commander Diffy is on the back porch sir.

PHIL
Thank you private.

PRIVATE
Yes sir.
(salutes and exits)

Phil walks into the kitchen. Through ajar backdoor he overhears Pim in a conversation through headset.

PIM
I don't care what the General said.
(beat)
No. That was too close for comfort.
(beat)
I could've been killed! Several people could've been killed.
(beat)

She pulls the headset off, and lets it hang around her neck.

(pushing past him into the kitchen)
Phil. You're up early.

PHIL
No earlier than you.

PIM
I have a lot of work to do.

PHIL
(grabbing her arm)
Who was that on the phone?

PIM
Colonel Ports. He was head of security last night.

Phil eyes her with suspicion, then lets go of her arm.

PIM
(walking out of the room)
Get some R and R. I'm giving you shore leave Diffy. You can thank me for it later, and tell Blondie I say hi, that is... if you can even find her.

PHIL
I'm not leaving.

PIM
(turning)
What?

PHIL
I didn't bring us here for vacation. I'm a part of this fight, Pim, and I'm sticking with you.

Pim looks as though she's about to argue then shrugs.

PIM
Your prerogative, Captain.
